Oh, honey, let me tell ya somethin’ about them fancy cups, the ones they call English bone china tea cups. My old bones remember when we just drank from whatever we had, didn’t care much about names. But these, these are somethin’ else.
See, they say you hold ’em up to the light, right? And if you see shadows through ’em, then it’s the real deal, the bone china. More money, they say. Folks pay more for that shadow play, imagine that. I reckon it’s ’cause they’re made with this bone ash stuff, makes ’em strong but see-through. Magic, if you ask me.
- Lookin’ for the fancy names?
Well, there’s this Wedgwood, and Royal somethin’-somethin’s, Spode too. Lots of ’em. People say they’re the best, but I just see pretty cups. But, hey, if they’re good, they’re good. You buy ’em, sell ’em, whatever you fancy.
Now, where do you get these things? Used to be, you went to the store, paid your money, and took ’em home. Now, they got this internet thing. eBay, they say, free shippin’ sometimes. Or Cat-a-wiki, or somethin’ like that. Sellin’ fancy stuff online. I don’t get it much, but the young’uns, they’re all about it.
You want the English style? Cups and saucers? They got tons. Unique, custom, whatever that means. Old ones too, vintage they call ’em. Forty different kinds, they say. Can you believe it? Forty! What’s a body to do with forty cups, I ask ya.
Then there’s this John Lewis place, partners or somethin’. They got a collection too. Bone china cups, pretty saucers. I saw one once, flowers all over, gold rim. Fancy, real fancy. But drink your tea the same, don’t it?
- They call ’em “deliciously British.”
Imagine that! Delicious cups! It’s the tea that’s delicious, ain’t it? But they know how to sell things, these folks. Tea party glamour, they say. A hundred years of it. Glamour, huh. We just had tea, didn’t think much of it. But I guess it’s nice to have pretty things, make you feel special.
So, you want one of them English bone china tea cups? Go ahead, get yourself somethin’ nice. Hold it up to the light, see them shadows dance. Think about all the folks makin’ ’em, hundreds of years maybe. Then pour yourself some tea, and enjoy. Just a cup, at the end of the day. But a fancy one, and sometimes, that’s all you need.
Don’t matter what they call it, bone china or somethin’ else. If it makes you happy, holdin’ that cup, feelin’ fancy, then it’s worth it. Go on now, treat yourself. You deserve somethin’ pretty.
